No. 1.-On the assumption that an Auxiliary local Force of non-Europeans is to be raised for supple- menting the defence of Hongkong (the numerical strength of the Force being about Infantry),
kindly state your views as to the best available ma- terial of which it might be composed, and whether you
would recommend a mixed, force, or one of one nationality.

- embodied; or of the nature of a Militia, to be trained in the first instance, and afterwards called out peri- odically?

No. 11.-Would the Chinese that might be recruited at Hongkong have good soldier-like qualities?
No. 12.-Would they be as amenable to strict discip- line, and as temperate and docile, as any Native Troops in Her Majesty's Service?
No. 13.-In case of an Auxiliary Force composed of Chinese, would the Officers have to master the Chi- ..nese language in order to have proper control?
